Wedding

Usually a Korean wedding ceremony is held at a private wedding hall.

It is conducted by the bride or bridegroom's teacher or a distinguished person.

When Koreans are invited to a wedding ceremony, they prepare a white envelope with money in it.

Marriage gifts are not common except very close friends.

Most of the guests give a white money envelope to a receptionist at the wedding.

The host makes a name list of all the people who give an envelope.

If the host is invited to weddings of sons or daughters of guests, the same amount of money is usually given to them.

Weddings are big family events so Koreans give this 'congratulation money' to help pay for the expenses.

Sometimes it costs a lot of money for salaried workers especially when there are many weddings during the wedding season.

Another occasion for giving a white envelope with money in it is when people die.

There is a special job related to marriage. It is called matchmaker.

Matchmakers are middle-aged women who connect daughters of the rich with promising young men like laywers and doctors.

If the couple gets married, the matchmaker receives big commissions from both families.

Matchmakers have name lists of hundreds of young people.

Of course, it is a tax-free business.
