I am a Civil Service Man

All Korean men must join the army by the law.
When they turn 19 years old, they go to a military hospital for a physical exam.
If they do not have a serious problem, most men join the regular army for 26 months.
The Navy and the Air Force require a written and an oral exam.

The Marine Corps is known for its hard training, so lots of brave Korean young men join the Marine Corps voluntarily.
They have a nick name 'Ghost-Catchers.'
They also have a well-formed veteran's organization.
They volunteer their services and assistance to the police, fire fighters and for the other social work.

Most college students join the army when they are freshmen or sophomores
and return to school after they have been discharged from the military.
This is why there is a two-to-three-year age difference between men and women classmates.

Korean women do not have any military duty.
To ease the disadvantage for men, the Government gives the 3% benefit in government exams for public servants
and recognize 3 years military service as job experience.
For example, if men and women start working at the same time,
women fall behind men in promotion and salary, even if they have the same qualifications as the men.
This has always been a hot issue for feminists.

There are two special army forces in the Korean military system.
One is the army police and the other is the civil service men.
It used to be called 'Banwe'.
Army police are assigned to a police station.
they are not controlled by army authorities, but by the police.
They mainly deal with direction of traffic, street patrols, and public security to assist the police station.
Most young traffic policemen on the street are army police.
Some of them are assigned to riot control.

But the civil service system is different.
Men who are not in good enough physical condition for active service such as men with flatfeet, weak hearts, or overweight men, join the civil service,
and also men who are 3rd generation of the family, whose family line would stop should they die, are also exempted from active service and assigned to the civil service.
The civil service, the irregular army, has a variety of jobs.
They work from 9 to 5 like public servants for 18 months.
They sleep in their homes and they don't get paid.
They assist with jobs in the army and in government organizations.
The merit of irregular army service is to reduce the military budget.

A famous action movie star joined the army, but he joined the irregular army.
It was strange because he looked very manly.
Later the public found out he had flatfeet.
