What is the Buddhist temple symbolic of?
You can find small Buddhist temples hidden deep in the mountains.
Reaching Buddha's land is like climbing up a mountain.
You need effort and patience to climb up a mountain. It's not easy.
The temple is the cradle in which Buddhists follow Buddha's word, mediate and give Buddha's message to the world.
It is the place where leads people to their paradise. Most Korean temples are located in the mountains.
The last Chosun Dynasty(1392-1910) adopted Confucianism and an anti-Buddhism policy.
Because of this, most Buddhist temples were moved to the mountains.
At the entrance of the temples there are streams and stone bridges.
When people cross these bridges, they throw away their agony and cross into the peaceful world.
There are also stone lanterns to lead people to the brighter world.

What are the "Three Gates" of Buddhist temples?
The gate of the temple is the entrance into Buddha's land.
Most temples in Korea have three gates.
They are called the Single Pillar Gate, the Four Heavenly Kings' Gate and the Salvation Gate.
When you pass through the first gate, you must leave your worries behind you.
There are four guardians at the second gate called heavenly kings, and if your heart is not ready to enter into the peaceful world, they will not let you through the second gate.
The last gate is the final gate for salvation. If you pass the last gate, you are in Buddha's land.

What is stupa(pagoda)?
The pagoda(stupa) is considered the house of Buddha's body, because it holds a Buddha's sari.
Sari are parts of the body which do not burn during cremation.
It is believed that sari is something that is created inside someone who has devoted themselves to Buddha.
When famous monks pass away, their funeral ceremonies are held in public, and their bodies are burnt to ashes.
After cremation, Buddhists find colored beads called sari from these ashes.
When Buddha passed away, there were thousands of sari.
Buddha's sari can be found in the pagodas of world famous temples.
Many Buddhists bow to worship them.
There are many brick pagodas in China and wooden pagodas in Japan.
But most of the pagodas in Korea are made of stone.
This is becauseit is easy to find excellent granite in Korea.
These pagodas are very beautiful.
It is hard to believe that they are made of stone.
'The Pagoda of many treasures' and 'the Sakya Pagoda' are two famous Korean stone pagodas.
