Life Begins At 60
When Koreans turn 61 years old, they have a big celebration. All family members prepare their parents' 61th birthday. It is called "Hwan-gap" in Korean. All the sons' and daughters' friends, relatives and neighbors are invited to the party. It is the biggest event in a Korean's life. According to Oriental philosophy, 60 years means one has completed a full zodiac cycle. So Koreans believe they start their lives again at the age of 60. One zodiac circle takes 12 years, and a cycle is completed after 5 circles. At the time of completion, you are reborn. |
