Kye, This Is My Turn

 
There is a special system called 'Kye' which makes a large sum of money.
목돈을 만드는 특별한 제도로 계라는 것이 있다.
 
This has been a kind of custom from ancient times.
이것은 오래 전부터 전승되어 온 관습적인 제도로
 
Originally the Kye was for the friendship of a community,
공동 생활을 위한 친목 도모가 우선 목적이었다.
 
but it has changed according to member's needs.
그러나 지금까지 목적에 따라 매우 다양하게 변화되어 왔다.
 
Close friends, school alumni and neighbors get together every month.
친한 친구나 학교 동창 또는 이웃끼리 매달 모여
 
They collect money from all members and give the collection to a different member each month.
얼마씩의 돈을 내고 순번대로 목돈을 계원 중의 한 사람에게 준다.
 
The group leader manages this job.
이때 계주가 계원들의 돈을 관리한다.
 
For example, if there are twenty members in the Kye and each member pays 100,000 won every month,
예를 들면 20명이 계를 조직하고 그들이 한 달에 100,000원씩을 낸다면
 
2,000,000 won is collected each month.
2,000,000원의 돈이 모아지는 셈이다.
 
This sum is given to one person.
이 돈은 순번에 따라 매달 한 사람에게 주어진다.
 
If a person needs money in a hurry, he or she can take his or her turn early,
돈이 급한 사람은 빠른 순번을 택해 돈을 이용할 수 있지만
 
but this person must pay interest to the other members.
그만큼의 이자를 부담해야 한다.
 
Sometimes the Kye is broken up because the leader takes all the money and runs away,
가끔 계주가 돈을 가지고 도주해 사고가 나기도
 
but in most cases, a reliable person becomes the leader of the Kye.
하지만 대부분은 믿을 만한 사람이 돈을 관리한다.
 
This customary system still remains among middle-aged people for collecting money.
이 관습적인 제도는 중년들 사이에서 아직도 돈을 모으는 방편으로 사용되고 있으나
 
Among young people the Kye is not popular for money, but for friendship and special activities.
젊은 세대들 사이에서는 목돈을 모으는 목적보다는 친목이나 취미 활동을 위주로 하는 계모임이 활발하다.
 
Recently there are Kyes for overseas travelers and people who want to eat something special.
최근에는 해외 여행을 위한 계나 먹자계도 유행하고 있다.
 
 
* annual excursion : 곗돈 모아서 일년에 한 번씩 가는 단체 여행, 혹은 유람...
(What about making a Morning Special kye with your neighbors, and going to open studio, just like Michael said?? *^^*)
