I like a Son

Koreans have strong family relationships.
Young people live with their parents until they get married.
So family members naturally get together for meetings, parties and to discuss family matters.
If Koreans have no children, it is a big family concern.
But Koreans have different ideas about adoption.
That's why Korean orphans have been adopted abroad.
After modernization, the number of unmarried young mothers has increased, but only a few families want to adopt children.
Although they adopt a dhild, they do it in secret.
Sometimes mothers who want to adopt pretended to be pregnant.
It is because they try to protect their adopted children from unnecessary problems while they are growing up.
Koreans think that the blood line is very important and this is why Koreans prefer to adopt children from their relatives rather than from strangers.

The Korean government has tried to ecourage domestic adoption, but failed.
Until now Korea has remained a country which exports orphans.
It is a pity, but it is not easy to break tradition and custom.
Every family wants at least one boy, so if a young married couple doesn't have a son, they will have a problem.
If the husband is the eldest son, the problem becomes serious.
That is why we sometimes see large families.
If a family has three daughters and no sons, sometimes the third daughter's name is a boy's name because the family expected a boy next.

Since nuclear families have increased, boys outnuber girls because young couples who want a boy have at clinics if the baby's sex is female.
This is why the ultrasound exam is banned by the government.
When these boys grow up, Korea might need to import women from other countries.
The government runs campaigns to break the boy preference custom.
One funny slogan is "A good daughter can beat ten boys." which is true.
Mothers and daughters have a strong relationship in Korea even after marriage.
So there are some funny sayings such as "If you have a son you will have a domestic trip, but if you have a daughter you will have an overseas trip."
