1) Annual Salary System Wide Spread Among Companies
The number of business groups that have decided to introduce an annual salary system are rapidly increasing now a days. Before the International Monetary Fund bailout of Korea last year, domestic companies were waiting to see how the wind was blowing hesitating over the system's introduction. However, the trends to adopting annual salary scale, rather than the traditional monthly scale with quarterly bonuses, steadily has gained favor. This year almost 75 percent of business groups decided to make the switch. In addition to that, employing workers on a contract basis as well as internships are also popular and more aligned with western formats.
2) Choheung Bank Will Get 2.5 Trillion Won Bail out
The government will supply Choheung Bank with 2.5 trillion
won in public money sometime in early February. An
undisclosed official from the Financial Supervisory
commission (FSC) announced on Jan. 13. "The FSC basically
approved the normalization plan which Choheung Bank
presented. The FSC will formally give its approval on 15th."
The official added that, "According to plan, Choheung Bank
will move its headquarters to Taejon from Seoul, and
liquidate some of the subsidiaries. Accordingly, Choheung
Bank will initially decrease its current capital by the ratio of
4.5 to 1 while at the same time expanding its capital sealing?
from the current 2 trillion won to 5 trillion won. The
government will make an agreement requiring Choheung to
advance its financial state. If the bank is unable to keep its
promise, the FSC will require the bank's management to
resign all together.
